I grew up surrounded by entrepreneurs, attending meetings with my mom after school and on the weekends, and listening to the stories of my self-made grandfather. But I never set out to run a bootstrapped SaaS marketing technology company. It just sort of happened along the way. From selling ads to websites to apps, one thing led to another, and here I am.
Tech is messy. Tech is complicated. Tech is really freaking hard.
And I love it.
I love solving the problems faced by SaaS companies. Reducing customer churn and increasing product adoption. Closing big deals in a fiercely competitive (and saturated) market. Growing a radically efficient sales team from nothing. Creating value for customers so they buy, and buy again, and buy yet again. Building a company that employees can be proud of and where they can do their best work. And most of all, running a profitable company in a business climate where that’s an anomaly. I love it all.
So, while this path chose me, I would not have had it any other way.
Thinking back to the past 20 years in marketing technology, there have been so many incarnations of our company and chapters in the story. Beacon9 is a place to share my scraped knees and lessons learned. If nothing else, I am practical, and I am far more tactical than strategic. So, no theories here. Just real-world, in-the-trenches experiences that I hope can help you in your business.
